EXTRA CREDIT: Blog Three Revisited (Due Friday, July 29th/worth 20 extra credit points)

Sustainability. Green Talk. Save the Planet! Earth Day!

This is the world we live in, one that has been depleted, abused, and taken for granted, especially since the Industrial Revolution. You all will be hearing more of this talk of sustainability in the future, not just because it's part of the FGCU mission, but because we all recognize that the way we live can't continue.

For this final blog, I'd like to read two things:

1) You calculated your environmental footprint for a previous blog, and made a commitment to making some changes. Please reflect on those changes and whether you were successful. If it was difficult, explain why. If you learned some shortcuts, share them with us!

2) Describe one thing you will do, create, join in the fall that will continue your mission to help save our environment. Even if it's a course you plan to take, a club you plan to join, or a way you will provide service, how will YOU contribute to the "discussion,"  the green revolution? I already know how your minds work as Inventors ... so what's next?

Thank you for a splendid six weeks; enjoy the rest of your summer!

Blog Four: Due Friday, July 22nd

As you design and prepare to market your product, consider some of the strategies we've reviewed in class. We've discussed jingles, celebrity endorsements, web-ads, popular music, shock-value, and some of the ways marketers manipulate their audiences. We've also considered whether advertising "green" products is honest or just window-dressing an otherwise traditional product.

For this blog, I want you to find and include an advertisement you really like, one that makes you want to buy the product (or one you really dislike that makes you never want to buy the product). Embed the ad (with a link or image) and evaluate it. Essentially, you are writing an extended TAP document for this ad. What is the THESIS (overall message)? What is the PURPOSE (to make you commit to a product, agency, venue, etc.)? And finally, what is the AUDIENCE (who is the target demographic for this ad)?

Have fun picking your ad!

Blog Three: Due Monday, July 11th

Visit the above website and calculate your personal ecological footprint (base it on your life at home before you came to FGCU; you may need to consult someone in your household for some of the answers.).

Then, in your blog entry, list the number of earths it would take to provide resources/global acres to support your lifestyle. Then, define a footprint and explain how it relates to the broader concept of sustainability. How do we use this measure to interpret our life choices? Finally, and most importantly, select one area where you can reduce your own footprint. Explain your choice and live with it for a week, keeping notes on your success or failure. You will have the chance to address the changes you’ve made in a later assignment.
